Larry Weeks, the heart behind Montana Bird Tours, is a seasoned birder with over 30 years of experience exploring Montana’s diverse avian habitats. Larry combines his extensive knowledge of Montana’s landscapes with a knack for making birding approachable and exciting for enthusiasts of all levels. As an educator and conservation advocate, Larry’s tours are more than just birdwatching—they are immersive experiences that foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Beyond guiding, Larry is an educator and conservationist. He has worked closely with the Five Valleys Audubon Society, leading field trips and delivering engaging presentations in schools to inspire a love of birds in the next generation.

A Quick Biography of Larry Week

A Life of Dedication to Forestry and Paper Technology

Larry Weeks, a lifelong learner and dedicated community member, was born in Cooperstown, New York, in 1938 and grew up on a dairy farm. After initially studying agriculture, Larry shifted to forestry at Syracuse University and later specialized in pulp and paper technology. His professional journey took him west, joining Waldorf Paper Products in Missoula, Montana, in 1963.

Finding a Second Calling

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Larry found a second calling in conservation and education, focusing on birds and wildlife. Inspired by his eldest son’s passion for ornithology, Larry embraced birding 30 years ago, becoming an integral part of the Five Valleys Audubon Society. He has since skinned over 300 bird specimens and created educational programs for school children, sharing his expertise through engaging presentations.

Larry’s career at the mill spanned three decades, during which he helped advance technological and environmental practices, including sustainable operations like recovery boilers. He retired in 1994, leaving a legacy of innovation and leadership in the industry.

Advocating for Montana’s Birds

An advocate for habitat preservation, Larry has worked tirelessly to protect the natural ecosystem of the former mill site, emphasizing its value as a prime birding location in the Missoula Valley. His commitment to community, education, and the environment continues to define his active retirement, which also includes daily six-mile hikes on Mount Sentinel to stay in shape.
